Alaa Al Hawarneh

Alaa Al Hawarneh is a Ph.D. candidate in the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on optimizing the structural systems of reinforced concrete bridges by minimizing life-cycle cost and maximizing performance under seismic actions. His research interests include earthquake engineering, structural health monitoring, computational mechanics, applied optimization and construction management. He published so far, a journal paper in Automation in Construction Journal, which is one of the best journals in Construction Technologies and another paper in Expert Systems with Applications Journal, which is ranked # 1 in Artificial Intelligence world-wide.

Alaa enrolled in the Civil Engineering program at the University of Sharjah and graduated with Bachelor of Science degree in July 2014. He was awarded the university shield for outstanding students with the first-class honour. Alaa received his Master’s of Science in Civil Engineering from the American University of Sharjah, UAE, in December 2016. He got then his Master’s of Science in Construction Management from the University of Sharjah, UAE, in July 2017. He was awarded a graduate teaching assistantship throughout his Master’s degrees and got full scholarship due to his high records.

Professional Career

Alaa has 7 years professional experience as a structural engineer in one of the reputable consulting companies in Dubai, UAE. Alaa was involved as a Structural Engineer in 43 projects in 5 countries including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Iraq. The projects included design, analysis, strengthening and renovation of different kind of structures. He was Familiar with the international codes and standards of structural engineering such as the ACI 318, AASHTO, NBCC, CSA S6, and EN 1992. He got Dubai’s professional license in structural design of [ G + 4] buildings and [ G + 12] buildings in April 2019 and March 2021 respectively. Next, he got the structural steel design license and pre-stressed concrete design licence from Dubai Municipality in April 2021 and August 2021 respectively.

Alaa acquired various global credentials during his professional career. He got the LEED GA certificate in November 2017, the PMP®-PMI credential in January 2019, and the Six-Sigma black-belt from IASSC in June 2021.
